String Theory seeks to unify quantum mechanics and describes how extremely small particles behave and how gravity works in very large dimensions. It has also led to the proposal of other related ideas, such as supersymmetry, which suggests the existence of additional fundamental particles that are partners to the known particles in the standard model of particle physics. Supersymmetry could provide a solution to certain issues in particle physics, including the hierarchy problem, which deals with the large disparity in energy scales between gravity and the other fundamental forces.
