As technology keeps improving, humans keep trying to simulate complex models where intelligent or conscious life could emerge. We will try to simulate universes or this could even be a side effect of looking for simple and practical answers to questions, such as how to organize society, right up to getting to the end point of fundamental physics questions.
Therefore in the grand scheme of things, and on the condition of it being physically possible, humanity is at the precipice of creating digital life. We will be their gods, and their computerized universe will feel just as real but intangible as our universe does to us.
Given this, there's a huge chance that we are in a simulated universe ourselves as the guinea pigs of the experiments we will soon be performing. There's likely layers upon layers of this.
Perhaps it's primitive intelligent beings that need to ask "why" in order to learn and evolve, but at the stage where the species no longer evolves and instead question their own existence, this must be quelled or satiated with "answers".
Of course, it makes absolutely no difference to us as a species or our day to day life. This is more of a thought experiment.
