Generated vs. non-generated images – where is the line?

Where is the line, and how do we know it?

If a picture is taken, then processed/edited: at what point is it no longer real? The low hanging fruit is the stereotypical "shopped" photo, it isn't a "real" picture anymore but it wasn't generated. But what about generative fills? Or generated objects added? etc. etc.

This all started because I was running through realornotquiz.com and was given a picture that is in an article with the description "The entrance to the governor's office at the New Jersey Statehouse in Trenton"

Fulop is running for N.J. governor. Here’s who else could be in the 2025 race to succeed Murphy. - nj.com

So I declared it was a "real" photo, and the quiz told me I was wrong. And I honestly don't know if I was or not.

And that got me spiraling into "at what point is a real image no longer a real image", whatever that means. I got twisted in knots and needed to come here. What say you?
