If you don't know, CEO of OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI all are calling for slowdown of AI development or as they like to say because why not "pacing the frontier." I've seen two common reasons for why they are coming out calling for this.
A. Genuine concern for safety.
B. They are scared of losing to China so a slowdown would effectively be an excuse to shareholders for why they are losing to China.
These are probably all possible but I have some theories as well:
A. It is getting more and more unaffordable to pay for these powerful models in the data centers and the revenue these companies are getting from subscriptions aren't enough (I mean openai pro new subs being paused kinda points to this)
B. Kinda similar to A but basically that these companies are having trouble meeting the demand.
C. These companies are worried that the better AI gets the more they'll have to raise costs on the consumer side and too many people will finally say "I'm not paying for this" we already have people quitting chatgpt subscriptions due to Astra usage limits.
What do you guys think are the reasons?
