The PyTorch Foundation announced on September 8 at PyTorch Conference China in Shanghai that Alibaba Cloud and Cambricon joined as Platinum members. Each gets a seat on the Governing Board and one on the Technical Advisory Council.
If you build on non-NVIDIA accelerators, the TAC seat is worth watching. Cambricon ships MLU processors into Chinese data centers, and their PyTorch backend has lived out of tree, meaning it can lag or break after major releases. A TAC seat gives them a direct channel to push backend support upstream rather than maintaining a fork. That is a real difference for anyone on that hardware.
I want to be clear about what this does not change. A governance seat is not a benchmark, and the silicon itself is not suddenly matching an H100 on throughput. More than 250 Chinese organizations were already contributing to foundation projects before these seats existed. What changed is who has input on framework architecture decisions.
Both companies that took those seats are lines in CNQQ, with Alibaba at 8.67% and Cambricon at 2.62% of the latest published holdings. The accelerator maker is a small fraction next to the internet and cloud line. CQQQ overlaps on the larger names but draws from a narrower mainland slice.
